![]() Steel Petal Press is a Chicago-based design and letterpress studio specializing in greeting cards, stationery and gift items. So, as you know, we’re impressed with Steel Petal Press – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others. All the small steps eventually added up to where I am today. I struggled a lot with self-doubt and insecurity, but it was small victories that gave me strength and kept me going. When it was just me I worked all the time and hardly made any money. The first few years, I really struggled to find my voice, and to make unique products that would stand out in the marketplace. Since the beginning, it has been a very slow, long uphill battle. ![]() Overall, would you say things have been easy for you? We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. If you come at the right time you might even catch the presses in action. Our brick and mortar retail shop carries Steel Petal Press greeting cards printed by hand, in-house and other gift items from independent designers around the country. In 2016 we moved to our flagship studio and retail shop in Logan Square where we are open to the public 7 days a week. Our cards are carried in over 200 stores across the country including Paper Source. We now have three presses, four employees and an intern. I started selling the cards at a few local shops, and the company took off from there. Steel Petal Press was born when I designed and printed greeting cards for personal use to send to friends while still in grad school working towards my MFA. I was first introduced to letterpress printing while earning my BFA at San Francisco Art Institute. Silver Springs features the fresh clear water of a natural spring, bright green watercrest, and skunk cabbage in a perfect springtime scene. Inspired by White Pines Forest State Park in Ogle County, Illinois. White Pines Park is the southern-most stand of native white pines in Illinois towering up to an impressive 90 feet tall. Stone Beach's rock and sand beaches along the shore of Lake Michigan, inspired by Illinois Beach State Park in Lake County, Illinois. Inspired by Lover’s Leap at Starved Rock State Park in LaSalle County, Illinois, this print will transport the viewer to a new place. Starved Rock's sandstone bluffs overlooking a river carved out by glaciers and water over millennia. This pine cone letterpress printed greeting card was originally carved as a woodblock this reduced version is printed with magnesium plates. This greeting card is inspired by Moraine Hills State Park in McHenry County, Illinois. As glacial ice broke away and melted, large ‘kettle’ depressions were created. Leatherleaf Bog features cattails at the edge of a bog. Inspired by Chain O' Lakes State Park in McHenry & Lake counties, Illinois. Hand-set type and block printed card.
